A willow in my hand
Sets the example
It’s strong, tough, yet pliable.
It becomes the wicker basket
Only because it yields.

Scott Tallent (1970 - 2023) was a psychiatrist by profession and spent 20 years dedicated to mental health and the well-being of his patients. Originally from Anderson, South Carolina, he eventually settled in Louisville, Kentucky where, after years immersed in science courses and study, he developed a love for poetry--naming Gregory Orr as his favorite poet and William Stafford as the poet he most respected. Scott was particularly intrigued by poetry therapy and claimed, “I write poetry because it’s a way to say the ineffable.”

Yes, brevity. The willow is an effective way to broach the confounding continuum of passivity and assertiveness.
