Offerings

Off a beaten path,

Moses’ bush burning.

Mushrooms form a ring

of white on the ground.

A scent of ripeness,

vines crisscross a rock wall.

Fox grapes plop offerings

to woodland creatures.

Gum Log and Brasstown Creeks merge,

a thousand diamonds on ripples.

River cane hugs the banks,

cattails shake their bronze heads.

Far from the village,

only the whistled notes

of a nuthatch break the silence;

the honeysuckle spreads fragrance.
