Floating in Leaky

I am buoyant, floating
On my back,
Drifting where the lazy river takes me.
Trees crowd the bank,
Limbs frame the blue sky above me,
Water fills my ears,
Muting the sound of the world around me,
But the laughter of my friends nearby
Seeps through.
It makes me smile.
I can hear my heart beat,
My lungs sound like bellows.
I close my eyes and surrender
To these stolen moments of solitude.

Julie Creighton is retired and lives with her husband of 50 years on a ranch in central Texas. Although she has always enjoyed reading, Julie's appreciation for poetry really developed late in life. She began writing poetry after a girls' trip where the theme was to bring and share favorite poems. At the end of the weekend, each wrote an original poem to share with the group. Julie enjoyed this new experience so much that she has begun sharing her experiences and thoughts through poetry. Your Daily Poem has moved her to want to share her poems.

Lovely! I have never floated in an inner tube; thank you for the vicarious ride. I'm right there in the water with you.

This poem is so photographic and sensual. I can see the speaker floating in the lazy river as tree limbs frame blue sky, feel the water filling her ears, hear the muted sounds, the laughter and lungs bellowing.

This is the type of poem that you read over and over on a tense day to just float away. Thank you.

I too remember floating in an inner tube ... "just being" memories. I actually can feel the sun on my face. Thank you:)
