Summer
by

‘Tis summer, I know by the blue of the sky;
By the trees' deeper green, as beneath them I lie;
And more than all these, by the lovely wild rose
That now in the woodland its pink blossom shows.

Now ring the sharp scythes of the mowers all day,
And they spread to the air the sweet-scented hay;
They pile up the wagon ere daylight is done,
And singing come home with the set of the sun.

I feel the warm west wind fan gently my cheek
As I sit on the grass, far too happy to speak;
And then in the twilight I see the faint spark
Of the fire-fly, flitting alone in the dark.

Oh! long happy days, when 'tis full of delight
To roam in the meadows from morning till night!
Oh! summer, sweet summer! glide slowly away,
For I love in your warmth and your fragrance to stay.

I am new to the "dailypoem". Enjoy reading all but today's poem "Summer" is my favorite so far. I"m old school and Henry P. Nichols is too. His words touch my heart and inspire.

I like all these comments, and I love the poem. For me, old school is good school, not only because of the rhyme and meter, but also because it often depicts a lifestyle many people will never experience or enjoy in their lives. I was fortunate to grow up "rural" and have been blessed, for most of my life, to have lived and still live rural. God's wonderful natural world has always surrounded me and been "part and parcel" of who I am. I do so appreciate and treasure these poems. I hope they encourage readers to get out and enjoy the world as God intended it to be.

To roam in the meadows from morning till night!. This poem captures my idea of poets of yesteryear. It seems to portray an innate appreciation of the outdoors, a slower lifestyle, and a rhythm of praise for his awareness of sights and sounds.

For us who live in the north land, winter is always in the backs of our minds, even during during the lush sweetness of summer. I find a hint of that-"glide slowly away" in the ending of this poem.

Great post, Jayne, this poem truly endorse the goal of "Poems to Lift You Up and Make You Smile." Love the cadence and rhyme-sequence by Nichols. We contemporary poets have much to learn from our brothers who wrote in classical forms.
