Blessed art thou, Miss Corchran,
Patron Saint of first grade.
With your magical wood wand,
you’d point to the numbers on the blackboard
and instruct us to add and subtract the sums.

Blessed art thou, Miss Corchran,
Patron Saint of first grade.
You’d warm our wet woolen mittens
to they’d be toasty when we went home.

Blessed art thou, Miss Corchran,
Patron Saint of first grade.
How kind you were to Nicki,
the freckled, red headed twin
who stood to read DICK and JANE
while pee puddled on the floor.
Blessed art thou, Miss Corchran,
Patron Saint of first grade.
You taught us that more than knowledge,
it was the teacher who mattered in life.

Lovely poem. Teachers need a good word these days.

Doesn't this poem speak the truth! I am in a poetry group along with a retired kindergarten teacher. From her writing I know she put the KIND in kindergarten.
