In No Hurry

Judi Brown

I follow the trail to William Blake Pond
where Red Efts sleep under the ice
beaver dam barely visible under the snowpack

I'm in no hurry
it is all about the journey

mind on an aimless vacation
muscles grateful for the exertion
spirit dancing on the wind which occasionally whips powder off the pond
into gentle funnel clouds

I listen to the music of the forest
one lone note
bark against bark
silence yet not silent

I stick out my tongue
and catch a snowflake

Judi Brown wrote her first poem in 2008; she says "they have been flowing through me" ever since, and she keeps paper and pen handy so she can capture whatever, whenever it comes. Judi describes her day job  as "immensely rewarding;" she raises funds to support causes that are meaningful to her and which help to repair and improve the world. Judi enjoys walking in the woods and laughing with family and friends.

I'd never have the courage to write a line so much longer than its fellow lines: "spirit dancing on the wind which occasionally whips powder off the pond" I'm glad Judi did.

A red eft is the terrestrial stage of the red-spotted newt which is a type of salamander. Don't think I've ever seen one in a poem before.

I like 'bark against bark' and imagine a sudden sound hitting a tree trunk.
