I saved a turtle yesterday
I found him in the road
He wasn't fast so he got passed
By his friend Mr. Toad
By the look upon his face
I knew that he was worried
But we all know the turtle's pace
He simply won't be hurried
I'm sure the poor thing's life flashed by
As the big truck rumbled past
So I bent down and picked him up
And set him over in the grass
He didn't speak (they can't you know)
As down the path he trod
But just before I turned to go
I'm sure I saw him nod
Then he paused and looking back
He smiled as if to say
"Thank you for your kindness, friend
And your help along the way"
Then I thought of how it is
Things just don't go as planned
All of us from time to time
May need a helping hand
But now I know just what I'll do
Because I plainly see
If I will just be there for you
Maybe you'll be there for me
And when we've helped each other
We'll both smile and say
Thank you for your kindness friend
And your help along the way
As I travel this life's road
With its obstacles and hurdles
There are times it truly seems
To be much like that turtle's
That ole devil tries to run me down
In his anger and his wrath
And then the Good Lord picks me up
And sets me on a better path
And someday when at last I see Him
I'll smile at Him and say
"Thank you for your kindness Lord,
And your help along the way"
