Sunburned Men and Tired Horses

Look out yonder. Cowboys comin’
Single file, ridin’ in
Break of day when gatherin’ started
Day’s now comin’ to an end

Sunburned men on tired horses
Ridin’ easy, ridin’ slow
Workin’ cowboys ridin’ quiet
Horses’ heads are swingin’ low

Work began before the dawning
Caught ‘em fresh by lantern light
Saddled up then grabbed a biscuit
Long trot out while it’s still night

After many miles of searchin’
Canyon rim and cedar mott
After many saddle hours
On a dusty day, and hot

Now and then a sprint to turn ‘em
Divin’ down a rocky slope
Rollin’ rocks and poppin’ cedars
Find a place to throw your rope

Swing and catch and lay a trip line
Tie ‘em down and climb back on
Gather one and then another
Till the gatherin’ time is gone

Then you turn your weary pony —
Neck and flanks a-sweat with foam —
Back toward that place you started
Back toward the barn and home

In at last, you pull the saddles
Turn ‘em loose and watch em roll
Give ‘em hay, and grain, and water
Hear the cook’s triangle toll

Meat ’n’ taters fill your belly
Tell your stories ‘bout your day
Do some mendin’, maybe readin’
Then it’s time to hit the hay

On the morrow, after breakfast
Strength renewed, and, with a grin
Sunburned men on fresh new horses
Will be ridin’ out again

Darrell Arnold has been writing poetry for more than forty years. He was an associate editor at Western Horseman magazine for five years, then launched his own publication, Cowboy Magazine, which ran for nearly eighteen years. Poetry, primarily cowboy poetry, was an integral part of both publications. In the early ‘90s, Darrell started turning his poetry into songs and has now had more than 20 poems recorded by various western singers; three of them have earned "Song of the Year" awards from Western Writers of America and the International Western Music Association. In 2023, Darrell's book, A Bard in Boots, earned him the Gold Medal from the Will Rogers Medallion Awards for literature. He continues to write poetry and has extended an open invitation to cowboy singers everywhere to team up with him to make more memorable songs. Great poem! He put the whole western experience into a new perspective for me. I've read it several times to feel the experience!

I could almost hear the clop of hooves and the creak of leather from this poem.

Thank you Jayne. Not a cowboy, but spent 10 years in Alberta, Canada's wild west, so learned a bit of the cowboy way. Thank you Darrell, made my day!

It made my day as well. It is always good to see one of Darrell's poems. And so good to hear from you, Jayne. Overwhelmed here in WI -I hope this little nudge will help me remember to go to one of my favorite pastimes, YDP

Love it. I see the name Darrell Arnold and the tips of my ears prick up like an hound dog that hears someone pleasing… And it is so good to see you writing to us out here across the land. Have always loved having a bit of poetry in my inbox. Made my day. Thank you
