Now, it truly is amazing
How the years go racing by
While you're busy out there chasing
After rainbows in the sky,
But one day you check the mirror
And the person there within
Has watched 50 years go passing;
Heck, it seems like only ten.
So you survey what's around you
And it's maybe not as great
As you told yourself it would be,
Back when you were twenty-eight.
Still, you've got your health and fam'ly,
And, by God, you're still around.
Think of those who had it better
Who are now six under ground.
Friend, don't mourn your loss, be grateful,
For those years that went before.
They were just the pathway leading
Down the trail to fifty more.

Darrell Arnold has been writing rhyming poetry for more than forty years. He was an associate editor at Western Horseman magazine for five years, then launched his own publication, Cowboy Magazine, which ran for nearly eighteen years. Poetry, primarily cowboy poetry, was an integral part of both publications. In the early ‘90s, Darrell started turning some of his poetry into songs and has now had more than 20 poems recorded by various western singers; three of them have earned "Song of the Year" awards from Western Writers of America and the International Western Music Association. In 2023, Darrell's book, A Bard in Boots, earned him the Gold Medal from the Will Rogers Medallion Awards for excellence in literature. He continues to write poetry and has extended an open invitation to cowboy singers everywhere to team up with him to make additional memorable songs. Yes, all true..We travel a very long road in this life, at least, I have at this age and the memories are the sweetest things we have. I did like the sentiments in this fine poem.

Optimism--the Cowboy Way! There is some depth to these words, too. They're not just platitudes by any means.
