An Inside Day
by

Today is an inside day.
Sills are soaked
With wind blown rain.
Windows are streaked
With streams of water.
Not a speck of blue in the sky.
The steel grey sea
Ripples with foamy white waves
Rolling one after the other
To shore.

Today is an inside day,
A day for reading a favorite book,
Watching old movies,
And playing board games with friends.
A day for grilled cheese sandwiches
And tomato soup
Served in thick-handled mugs.
A day for remembering
And sharing long forgotten stories
Of childhood adventures.

Today is an inside day,
A day with endless time for daydreaming
Or listening to the alternating rhythms
Of falling rain,
And the sweeping sounds
Of wind through trees,

Today is an inside day,
A day for noticing the quiet messages
Of your own heart.

Joanna Zarkadas has been practicing "“random acts of writing"” since she could hold a pencil; she's spent her entire professional life encouraging middle schoolers to do the same. Joanna's work has appeared in a variety of publications and she is a regular reader at The Art of The Spoken Word, a monthly poetry venue at the library in her home town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. When she isn't writing poetry, Joanna enjoys singing with Persephone's Daughters, a women's performing group, volunteering as a bedside singer for Cranberry Hospice of Plymouth, and spending time with her children and granddaughter.

This is lovely and is going in my "Save" folder. How I love those cozy days of gray skies and soup-and-sandwich lunches! Thank you for this. Kate Fellowes

I enjoyed your day inside from beginning to end. While grey outside, inside was filled with warmth and comfortable sensations. Wonderful!

I too have been realizing I need an inside day or two or three. The last verse speaks loudly to me in a sweet and soft way.

What would we do without grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup?
