They begin each spring
as single yellow pom-poms,
wobbly in fresh mulch,
hardly visible from the curb.
Eagerly I watch for a second bud
then a third, and a fourth.
Like first steps and first words,
I look forward to growth. Imagine
bushy yellow heads filling my garden,
forgetting for a careless moment
how marigolds bursting with blooms
will mean June and July are over
and summer is coming to an end.

I also love the line, "Like first steps and first words, I look forward to growth." Beautiful poem.

Those "yellow pom-poms" certainly are cheerful, so is this poem. Thank you for the smile.
