Distractions

Whenever Father
Set about papering
The Front-Room,
I was press-ganged
As his 'apprentice'.

Very deliberately,
The paste was brushed
To the margins;
Allowing for the removal
Of lumpy bits
And, above all,
Keeping the edges
Uncrumpled
And linear dry.

I watched
And listened
But, more so,
To the tempting smack
Of football
Against factory-gate
Outside.

Now,
As I iron items
On a sunny morning;
A C.D. of BBC's classics
Is intended
To motivate me .
But
It is the shrill, arresting
Whistle
Of a boastful blackbird
On a fence
Which steals
My focus
And fancy.

Gerard Coughlan lives in Cork City, Ireland. He has always loved poetry as an art form and has written all his life. Gerard says his chosen themes are many and varied, but he strives to include the magnificence of nature in many of his works, “even when it involves family relationships, dreadful urban planning, or the myopia which seems to plague so many of our politicians.” Gerard’s work has been featured in journals and on the radio; his influences have been Philip Larkin, Patrick Kavanagh, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Eavan Boland, and John Betjeman, among others.

Neat poem, Gerard, and an impressive list of artful mentors . . . little wonder that your poetry is well-known and widely published.
