Mississippi River
Silver beneath
the silver-beamed bridge
Brown silt underlighting the reflected sun
So swift
So smooth
We pass by
so swift
so smooth
On our silver-grey road
where the sun reflects silver-black

Sharon Waller Knutson:
I love this very soothing sensual poem with all the "S" sounds starting with Mississippi and then silver, silt, sun, swift, smooth and the repetition of silver, sun, swift, smooth.

Silver, silt, so, swift, smooth, sun. I love alliteration, particularly in poetry.

Larry Schug:
Scientifically speaking, it's all about light and our limited power of detecting some of it, including the light that we are made from along with everything else. Poetically as well as profoundly, "so swift" says all there is about the human condition.

I always love reading Lorraine's work - it takes me places! This is no exception. And I hope to get to the Mississippi again soon. For now this poem is doing the job.
