Miller Park

We sat on a park bench
eating protein bars
and cherry pie
washing them down with
Coke and silence,
bathed in newborn greens and
the cloudless purity
only blue displays
under an adolescent sun,
sentences of daydream
punctuated by passing dog walkers
clutching colored plastic bags;
joggers striding in
rhythmic meditation ;
and the occasional
hand in hand of elderly couples
gazing with youthful eyes,
aware
but ignoring
their late hour.
Just enough time
between appointments
to discard doctors and diagnoses
in the bin
for now
and embrace the voices
of children on the playground.
We sat on a park bench
swaddled in spring
smiling at each other.

"sentences of daydream punctuated by passing dog walkers" - this is a terrific phrase! Thank you for this poem, Kent - it's as though you saw me and my spouse in the park.

Glen Sorestad:
There are just so many great poetic touches in Kent's describing of this scene that I read its entirety without taking a breath -- and then that final line and its unexpected swaddle was just so perfect!

So tender . . . as it shows how we turn to art during the seasons of our lives. Nicely done, Kent.
